چکیده

This study examines and formulates the effect of acoustic parameters on the identification of Mandarin Tone2 and Tone3, which are timing of turning point (T_t), falling of F0 (F0_△), duration (T_d), and precursor register (Register). Three stimulus matrixes of tone tokens are set up with T_t and F0_△. Subjects identify tone tokens. In Experiment 1, matrixes are different in T_t or T_t/Td. In Experiment 2 a same target matrix is preceded by different precursor registers. Identification rate of Tone2 (P_I) is calculated. Repeated ANOVA is applied on mean P_I across each matrix. Logistic regressions between P_I and different predictors are adopted. The result shows: (1) both T_t and F0_△ are negatively relevant to P_I and interacts in a quasi-linear way; (2) both T_t and T_t/T_d, with negative effects, should be taken as independent predictors; (3) negative effect of Register is confirmed, but it works as a quadratic reciprocal predictor.

Perception of Isolated Tone2 words in Mandarin Chinese

Many tone3 words in Mandarin undergo “third tone sandhi”—a phonological rule that changes the first tone3 word in a tone3+tone3 sequence to a tone2 word. Thus, spoken tone2 words that have a tone3 counterpart are lexically ambiguous between a tone2 and a sandhi tone2 (underlyingly tone3). Thus while “yu2” in isolation means fish, in the sequence “yu2 hen3” it might mean either fish or rain. A c...

Selective Adaptation Tests on Mandarin Tone2 and Tone3

The experiment consists of one simple identification test and four selective adaptation tests on a synthesized /da2/-/da3/ continuum. Each selective adaptation test uses one of the four adaptors: tone2 /da/ (DA2), tone3 /da/ (DA3), tone2 /bi/ (BI2) and tone3 /bi/ (BI3). It shows that DA3 shifted the boundary of the continuum and DA2 showed a uniform effect on each stimulus. They both had a sele...

Speech Communication: 2aSC7 Gestural timing in Mandarin tone sandhi

Recently tones have been analyzed as articulatory gestures, which can be coordinated with segmental gestures (Gao, 2008). Using Electromagnetic Articulometry (EMA), this paper investigates the timing patterns in Tone3 variants under the framework of Articulatory Phonology (AP). Mandarin third tone sandhi (Tone3 → T3S / Tone3) is purportedly neutralizing in that the sandhi output (T3S) is acoust...

Internal Differences of Tones in Shandong Dialect

The present study employs phonetic means and LZ-Score values to systematically investigate and tonal patterns and the internal differences of tones in Shandong (Hereinafter, SD) dialect. The dialect regions selected in the study is Jinan, Liaocheng, Tai’an and Zibo, all of which belong to Xiqi district. Results demonstrate that all of the four regions deserve four tones, specifically, tonal val...

Phonetics of Speech Acts: A Pilot Study

This paper aims to investigate the effect of speech act and tone on rhythm. Participants were asked to produce four sets of words in five speech acts. PVI values of duration, pitch, and intensity were used to test the rhythm of vowels. Two main findings were concluded. First, speech act did not have any effect on rhythm, which may be caused by the fact that speech act were not performed on the ...
